Central Air Conditioning
Central air conditioning is standard in some Northwood IV and V apartments.
Window Air Conditioner Installation
If you live in a Northwood apartment that does not have central air conditioning, window air conditioners or portable, self evaporating air conditioners may be installed by our facilities staff. Residents are responsible for providing their own air conditioning units. Michigan Housing does not rent or sell air conditioning units. You may have one-air conditioner unit for each bedroom in your apartment.
If you have a window air conditioning unit and would like to have it installed, there is a one-time fee of $75 per window air conditioner that covers both installation and removal. This fee, as well as the electrical charges, are billed to the student’s account in one installment after installation. Portable, air conditioning units that have self evaporating technology are allowed and recommended. Even though these units need to be scheduled and installed by Facilities, there is no installation charge, however, electrical consumption charges still apply. Please note that portable units that do not have self evaporating technology are not allowed and will not be installed. See additional details regarding electrical consumption fees in the following paragraph.
Any window units must be 12 amps or less, a minimum of 5,000 BTUs and a maximum of 12,000 BTUs and must fit in the window opening.
Window Air Conditioner Fees
A flat monthly usage fee, based on the BTU rating of each air conditioner, will be charged to offset increased electricity consumption. This monthly usage fee will not change due to weather, occupancy or actual usage.
A minimum of one-month usage fee will be required with every air conditioning unit, regardless of the removal date. If you have your air conditioner(s) installed between the 1st and 14th of the month, the full monthly rate will be due for that month. If you have your air conditioner(s) installed after the 15th, you will be charged half of the monthly rate for that month. Unregistered air conditioners or air conditioners that were installed previously but not registered for the current cooling season, will be charged a fee of $35 per month for the duration of the cooling season; season length will be determined by Student Life Facilities Staff. All air conditioner fees, including installation and all monthly usage fees, will be combined and billed to your U-M account one time only.

Requesting an Installation
To request an air conditioner installation, complete the Northwood Air Conditioning Request form. We will try our best to install the air conditioner on the day you indicate on the form. Please note that when our installation requests are high, installation delays can be expected. You will be contacted via email of your scheduled installation date. On your installation date, please place the air conditioner in the room you specified and make sure there is clear access to the window. If extension cords are needed, please supply a three-wire grounded cord with a minimum of 14-gauge rating.
To request an air conditioner removal, please submit a Fix-It request and the unit will be removed in most cases within 24 hours.
