Inclusive Community, Discrimination, and Harassment Concerns

Guiding Principles

Michigan Housing’s response framework is guided by these principles:

Support, Education and Resources

M Housing is committed to providing support for those who have been targets of or feel impacted by an incident based on their identity. The more we understand how residents are experiencing interactions within their housing community, the better equipped we are to provide support, education and resources to residents and the community.

Reporting

All M Housing staff are trained to report any incident that could impact any M Housing community member (residents, permanent staff, ResStaff, student staff and visitors) personal safety, their well-being, or their ability to feel included in the community.

For awareness:

  • Some incidents may involve conduct that does not violate any law or university policy.
  • Some cases, however, do involve conduct that may violate federal, state, or local laws or university policies and M Housing staff will support residents in connecting to the appropriate campus units as necessary.
  • The act of reporting a concern or incident does not mean that such a report will lead to disciplinary action, follow-up, or engagement with individual students.

Preserving Freedom of Speech, Expression and Association

Freedom of speech and artistic expression are at the heart of the academic enterprise. M Housing is committed to a broad marketplace of ideas and diversity of viewpoints. Nothing about this framework or its implementation is intended to limit protected speech, expressive activities or association.
