FAQ – Returning Resident Housing 2025
Q: Will every student who registers for Returning Resident Housing receive on-campus housing for the 2025-2026 year?
This year, over 2,200 students registered for the process and we anticipate having on-campus space for just over 1,100 returning students. You should consider the possibility that we will not have space for you based on the number of students who register. At this time, we do not know the chances that a returning student will have to receive 2025-2026 on-campus housing
Q: Why can’t I select a room during the Returning Resident Housing room selection?
Possible reasons:
- A Returning Resident Housing registration was not submitted. Please note the deadline to apply is Friday, January 24th, 2025 at 11:59 pm EST.
- If you are in the system as a roommate group, rooms will show for your size group only. You will have to exit the group in order to search for rooms as an individual.
- If you are in the system as an individual (not part of a group), all rooms may have been selected. We will send an email when this occurs. See below for advised next steps.
Q: What are the February 4 selection timeslots and how are they determined?
If you successfully register for Returning Resident Housing by Friday, January 24th at 11:59 pm EST, and will participate in the February 4 self-selection day, Michigan Housing will send you your timeslot on January 30.
The timeslot is the start time that you will have access to search for and select a space. You will not have access before that timeslot start time. You will have until 5:00 pm EST on February 4 to select a space, regardless of when your timeslot began.
Timeslots are determined randomly. If you form a roommate group with other students, you and your roommate group members will receive the same timeslot.
Q: When I select my space on February 4, is there further action I need to take to secure on-campus housing?
Yes! If you are able to select a space on February 4, later that week we will send you a housing contract for the space you selected. After we send you the contract on Friday, February 7, you will have until Tuesday, February 11 at 5:00 pm EST to submit the contract.
Contracts not submitted by the deadline will be canceled.
Q: Why can’t I select a room with my preferred roommate?
Possible reasons:
- You are eligible for the space but your roommate is not (ex. Michigan Learning Community/Theme program participants and non-MLC/Theme program participants are not eligible to choose each other as roommates, as the program participant is assigned to program space).
- The room is designated for a specific gender identity and one roommate does not match that identity in the system.
- There are not any rooms remaining that match the size of your roommate group. If this occurs, try leaving the roommate group and continue searching.
Q: I cannot find any rooms close to my place of worship
- The self-selection process allows students to see what is available. We are not able to offer other rooms at this time.
Q: I cannot find any rooms that meet my medical needs.
- As the Returning Resident Housing process is self-selection, the expectation is that you are aware of your needs and should self-select a space that meets those needs. Please be aware this may mean selecting a space that does not meet all of your needs. Should you require additional accommodations assistance, please contact [email protected].
Q: I am participating in a Michigan Learning Community (MLC) or Theme Community, will I select my own space?
- Returning Residential College and Honors students will participate in self-selection. They will receive time slot information on Jan. 30 and participate in the February 4 self-selection day.
- All other returning students participating in an MLC or Theme Community will not participate in the February 4 self-selection day. Contracts for returning students participating in an MLC or Theme Community will be sent on January 28.
- Each MLC or Theme Community has their own process for selecting participants and determining the method of placement. Some programs will select the spaces on behalf of participants. Other programs will have Michigan Housing assign them using information provided by the program or in your Returning Resident Housing registration form.
Q: If I am in an MLC or Theme Community, can I live with a roommate who is not part of that community?
- Unfortunately no. Spaces within these communities are reserved for those who have applied and been admitted into these programs.
Q: How can I plan for 2024-2025 rates?
- Room rates are reviewed and approved by the Board of Regents on an annual basis, typically in late June. Please see information here regarding the current Undergraduate Room and Board Rates.
Q: There are no rooms available at my time of selection. What should I do?
- Please begin looking off-campus for housing, if you have not begun doing so already.
