Residence Education

Mission

Our Residential Education team’s mission is to foster your academic, cultural, intellectual, personal and social development and to create a safe, inclusive and respectful community in which you, and all members, can thrive.

Our Core Philosophies

Strong communities unite around mutual values, clear guidelines and common goals. Because you’ll be contributing to our community every day, we invite you to familiarize yourself with our common values.

Belonging

We are dedicated to creating an environment within Michigan Housing where every individual feels supported and connected. Our focus is on nurturing a community where everyone feels welcomed and empowered to thrive.

Developing Community

Our Residence Education team works to develop positive, inclusive communities by fostering meaningful connections with each resident. We strive to do that through:

  • Encouraging community interaction by organizing opportunities for residents to meet and learn
    about one another.

  • Implementing a variety of approaches to actively listen to and address the unique needs and
    changes within each community.

  • Empowering residents to take ownership of their actions and the impact they have on the
    community.

  • Guiding residents towards independence and encouraging thoughtful problem-solving skills.

  • Motivating residents to actively participate in shaping their living environment through involvement in planning, decision-making, and peer support activities.

Community Guidelines

When you enroll, you are agreeing to U-M’s Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and when you sign your contract with us, you are agreeing to the Community Living At Michigan (CLAM) standards and Michigan Housing’s policies and procedures. Because these provide the backbone of our community philosophies, and because you will be held accountable to them, we encourage you to read the CLAM.

Restorative practices

As community members, it’s vital for us to understand the impact and responsibility we hold within our community. When harm occurs, whether through our actions or by other ways, we acknowledge it and actively engage in efforts to restore and heal our shared connections.

Michigan Housing staff thank you for living with us this year!
