Cultivating Multicultural Spaces

Overview

M Housing is dedicated to creating multicultural spaces where residents can engage with diverse perspectives, build their community, connect with campus resources and learn from a variety of experiences. We invite you to explore our 16 multicultural lounges, 4 reflection rooms and The Connector — all designed to emphasize community interaction and personal reflection.

The Community Connections and Engagement Department hosts various events, programs and celebrations in our multicultural spaces and we hope you will engage with these opportunities and connect with your residential and campus communities!

Coming July 2025: Visit the site to learn more about how to connect and engage within our multicultural spaces

Multicultural Lounges

The multicultural and minority culture lounges celebrate the contributions and achievements of underrepresented groups. Unlike other spaces in residence halls, these spaces are specifically dedicated to sharing the stories and legacies of diverse cultures and individuals. Open to all residents, they provide opportunities for connection and engagement, allowing everyone to become part of the ongoing history and tradition of these unique spaces.

In 2021, these multicultural lounges proudly celebrated their 50th anniversary, marking half a century of fostering inclusivity and appreciation of different cultures within the community. This milestone was a testament to the enduring impact and importance of these spaces in honoring diversity and promoting meaningful dialogue among residents

The Connector

The Connector serves as Michigan Housing’s multicultural engagement center, housing the professional staff offices of the Community Connections and Engagement Department. It aims to nurture the development of the residential community by offering spaces for students to access department services and interact with fellow residents through regular programming.

Fall 2025 marks its 10th anniversary, and special birthday celebrations are planned throughout the year to commemorate a decade of fostering community and inclusion.

Reflection Rooms

Reflection rooms are located in Michigan Housing facilities for use by individuals for prayer, meditation or quiet reflection. There are currently four reflection rooms located in and operated by M Housing. The reflection rooms are meant to serve the residents who live within the M Housing community. Each reflection room requires access via MCard swipe and is drop-in only; you cannot reserve a reflection room and we ask that you only use them for 30 minutes at a time.

Reserving a Multicultural Space

Reservations for a multicultural lounge can be requested by professional and student staff, student organizations affiliated with the University, and campus partners. All reservations must be submitted 5 business days in advance through the Community Connections and Engagement Department by emailing ConnectAndEngage@UMich.edu.
