FIRST-YEAR AND TRANSFER APPLICATION INFORMATION

Welcome to Michigan Housing! Start here for instructions on filling out your first-year housing application; and an overview of the room assignment process.

All U-M students residing in Michigan Housing on the Ann Arbor campus are required to submit documentation showing whether they are vaccinated in line with the CDC immunization schedule noted here.

Once you have paid your enrollment deposit and have a U-M uniqname, you can submit your vaccination information here.

We will act on your application after your immunization information has been verified.

Fall first-Year Housing Assignment OVerview

To secure on-campus housing in your first year at the University of Michigan, you will need to complete a few tasks between April and August.

step by step task instructions

STEP #1: APPLYING FOR HOUSING

Applying for housing is the first step and lets Michigan Housing know you want to live on campus in your first year. When you apply for housing, you will:

  1. Provide important housing information, such as phone number, emergency contact, and missing person contact.
  2. Indicate housing preferences and room type.
  3. Learn how to request accommodations for health and disability, religious observance, or gender-based needs.

  4. Have the opportunity to apply to Michigan Learning Communities (MLCs) and Theme Communities.

  5. Choose the method that you get your room assignment: have Michigan Housing assign you using your application preferences or assign yourself to a room through the self-selection process.

  6. Answer a set of roommate-matching questions.

  7. Search for potential roommates and form roommate groups with desired roommates.

In order to receive on-campus housing, a housing application must be completed in full. No priority in room assignment is given to students who complete a housing application earlier than others. We encourage you to take your time completing your housing application.

Step #2: Getting a room Assigment

After you have applied for housing, a room assignment comes next. For new first-year students, if eligible, Michigan Housing allows you to decide how you get your room assignment. You have two options:

  1. Have Michigan Housing assign you.
  2. Assign yourself to a room.

Once you choose from the available options and complete your housing application, you will not be able to change your assignment method.

HAVE MICHIGAN HOUSING ASSIGN YOU

If you desire to have Michigan Housing assign you to a room, after you complete your housing application no further action is required until your room assignment is communicated to you.

Michigan Housing will use your housing application preferences, including campus, room type, roommate groups formed, and roommate matching questions to assign you to a room that meets as many of your preferences as possible.

This option may be beneficial if you:

  • Do not have strong preferences around specific buildings and rooms.
  • May feel overwhelmed by the research required to learn about specific residential communities and choose a specific room.
  • Are comfortable with Michigan Housing taking your campus, community, and room type preferences to assign you to a room that meets as many preferences as possible.

In late June, you will receive your room assignment and an offer to submit a housing contract for that assigned space.

ASSIGN YOURSELF A ROOM

If you desire and are eligible to assign yourself to a room, you will receive information and instructions on the process during the following timeline:

  • Early June: receive your designated self-selection date.
  • Mid-June: participate during your designated date in the self-selection process to select your room in the Michigan Housing portal.

Rooms will be available for selection beginning at your selection time slot. As other students select spaces, there will be fewer available rooms to select.

Students who form roommate groups will be able to select spaces on behalf of the entire group. However, there is no guarantee of room availability that fits the size of a roommate group.

This option may be beneficial if you:

  • Have the desire to research Michigan Housing residence halls and room types.
  • Are prepared to quickly identify alternative options if a desired room has been selected by another student.
  • Have strong preferences towards specific buildings and rooms.

Any student who desires to assign themselves to a room will be permitted to, with some exceptions. The following specialized communities will not select their room and will receive their room assignment from Michigan Housing:

  • Students accepted into a Michigan Learning Community (MLC) or Theme Community.
  • Students approved for accommodations for health & disability, religious observance, or gender-inclusive needs.
  • Students who express interest and are accepted into the Henderson House and Martha Cook communities.
  • Students who apply for housing late, after the mid-May deadline.
  • Students who fail to submit vaccination information.

Room assignments will be made within designated communities or rooms, using preferences indicated within the housing application.

Step #3: SUBMITTING YOUR HOUSING CONTRACT

Regardless of how your room assignment is created, in late June you will receive an offer to submit a contract for the space you assigned yourself or that Michigan Housing has assigned you to. You will submit your contract via your Michigan Housing portal.

You will have approximately three days to submit your housing contract and confirm your on-campus housing.

Once a housing contract is submitted, you are subject to all policies contained within the contract, housing Terms & Conditions, and Community Living at Michigan.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Space for transfer students is extremely limited and we encourage transfer students to explore off-campus housing options through resources such as Beyond the Diag

Transfer students will receive an email with a link to a housing application in mid-April if you’ve paid your enrollment deposit. Submission of a housing contract does not guarantee on-campus housing.

TIMELINE

APRIL 2 THROUGH AUGUST

The housing application will open to matriculated first-year students on Wednesday, April 2. After U-M receives your enrollment deposit, we will send you an email with a link to the Michigan Housing application. If you’ve submitted your enrollment deposit and waited three weeks but have not received an email, email us at [email protected]. Make sure you include your UMID number.

MAY 12

You have until May 12 at 9:00 AM EDT to submit your housing application. The application will ask for your preferences and we utilize room self-selection for portions of our process.

June 2

If you desire and are eligible to assign yourself to a room, on June 2 you will be emailed with a designated self-selection date and timeslot for the June 16 to 19 self-selection days.

Self-selection dates and timeslot are determined randomly. Students in a roommate group will receive the same date and timeslot. Changes to a designated date and timeslot are not permitted.

June 16-19

Failure to select a space will result in Michigan Housing assigning you to a space based on availability and communicating that room assignment on June 24.

June 24-27

If Michigan Housing is assigning you to a room, you will be notified on Tuesday, June 24 of that room assignment.

From June 24 to 27, all first-year students with room assignments will need to submit their contract and confirm their on-campus housing

A message will be sent to your University email account when it is time for you to take action on submitting the housing contract. Please submit your contract by 11:59 PM EDT on Friday, June 27.

When you submit your contract, you will also pick your time slot for move-in. Note, that once you have chosen a time slot, you will have the option to change that time slot at any time leading up to move-in if desired.

July

If you apply for housing after May 12 at 9:00 AM EDT and there is available space, you may be assigned to a room and receive a housing contract in July. Housing is not guaranteed and available space may be limited.

Early August

In early August, you’ll receive move-in information containing guidance on preparing for arrival to campus, where to go to check in, and other details to help you successfully move into your new home.

Parking permit applications become available for students living on campus who are interested in bringing a car. Permit applications will be available via the Michigan Housing portal. Spaces are limited and permits are not guaranteed. More information on Housing parking here.

Late august

Fall term room and board payment is due. Information about student bills can be found on the Student Financial Services website.

Note: Rates for 2025-2026 have not been determined at this time. They will be shared as soon as approved by the Board of Regents (typically mid-to-late June).

Important Information FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

  • If you decline the housing assignment sent to you, we will not be able to offer another until the beginning of fall term, provided there are vacancies
  • When assigning rooms, we do not consider academic unit, employment location, family alumni status or any other factors that are not included in the application
  • If you are 17 years old by the time your contract starts, you will be placed with a first-year student.

  • Michigan Housing is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight or veteran status.

Housing Application Instructions

We want to help you find a home that is right for you. To prepare for the application, please read through the guidelines below. To learn more about residence halls, consult our Residence Halls Comparison. You can also learn more about some specific options by visiting our Additional Living Options page. When you receive your application you will have 30 days to return it

  • Room Environment: All of our residences and rooms are smoke-free. Each year, a percentage of rooms are designated as substance-free. Substance-free rooms offer an additional measure of support for students who choose not to drink, smoke or use illegal drugs. Learn more at our Additional Living Options Page.
  • Room Type: The majority of rooms available for first-year students are double occupancy. Although there is no guarantee of a particular room type, there are some single occupancy and suite style units. Both of these options are generally at a higher rate than a double occupancy unit. Rate information available here.

  • All gender: The building and the corridor are open to all gender identities.
  • Female designated: The building is not identified by gender. The corridor is designated female.
  • Male designated: The building is not identified by gender. The corridor is designated male.

  • Theme Communities: Theme Communities offer residents a scaffold of new learning opportunities and collaborative activities. They allow students to pursue passions, explore new interests in a co-curricular setting, and ready themselves to apply their learning to a complex and diverse world. Apply hereStudents admitted to MLC programs will not be admitted to theme communities.

ROOMMATE REQUEST

If you would like to request a specific roommate, consider the following:

  • Michigan Learning Community (MLC) applications take precedence over roommate requests. If you are admitted to an MLC, roommate requests may not be considered. Further, it is conceivable one roommate will be admitted and one will not. Some MLCs do not consider roommate requests in their room placements.
  • Accommodation for a student's housing assignment because of a disability or chronic health condition supersedes all other requests including roommates.
  • If you find a potential roommate, and you mutually provide each other’s names on the application, we will do our best to assign you together. Roommates should make sure their room preferences closely align.
  • You may search for a roommate via our roommate finder. This service allows you to search for a roommate; if you find a potential roommate, and you mutually provide each other’s names on the application, we will do our best to assign you together. Roommates should make sure their room preferences closely align. Information submitted via the roommate finder is a tool for students to find a roommate and is not used by Michigan Housing to make housing placements.

  • To request a roommate, ALL roommates must:
    • Enter the 8-digit U-M student ID number of the other roommates on the application.
    • Enter the same housing preferences including North Campus neighborhood preference, room environment, and room type rate group.

When you sign your contract with Michigan Housing, you are agreeing to abide by the Community Living at Michigan (“CLAM”) standards and Terms & Conditions. Take a moment to read through the CLAM, and please read the Proper Use Agreement for technology.
