Winter Term Housing Update

Dear residents,

As we finish fall term, I want to thank every resident for showing the care and concern for each other, that has made an on-campus residential experience possible. On Friday, President Schlissel announced plans for winter term, encouraging students to attend remotely if they can from their permanent residences. To make this possible, Michigan Housing is terminating undergraduate housing contracts for Winter 2021 and releasing all undergraduate residents from their financial obligation for winter term. We recognize that you may already have made plans that now need to be adjusted, and we want to assist you as you navigate this change.

For some students, on-campus housing is fundamental to their university experience, and Michigan Housing will remain open for a number of residents in need. Following recommendations from the public health community, we will assign students in winter term to single-occupancy rooms. Our experience has shown that this is an important way to reduce risk and keep residents healthy.

As you carefully consider your plans for next term, our commitment to one student per room means we likely will not have space for every resident wishing to return. To request a space for winter term, complete this form where you can detail your circumstances. Our priority will be to provide housing for those in need, carefully considering housing insecurities, health and safety concerns, financial circumstances, international status, specific academic program requirements for in-person instruction, and other extraordinary, extenuating circumstances. Students who are offered a space will receive new contracts, in many cases in a different building.

As part of rejoining campus winter term, residents also will be renewing their commitment to our Culture of Care. Next term, that will include not just observing campus guidelines on social distancing and face coverings, but also participating in required pre-arrival testing as well as mandatory weekly testing. This will be a requirement for continuing to live in Michigan Housing, and we are committed to making the process easy and accessible.

The form for requesting winter term housing is now live here, and will close November 11. Our plan is to reply to each request no later than November 16.

We know you may need more information, and we will be updating our Housing FAQs and the Campus Blueprint regularly as details are confirmed. We appreciate the understanding of our community.
