MULTICULTURAL LOUNGE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

INTRODUCTION

Michigan Housing’s Diversity and Inclusion Office is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Multicultural Lounge Program and its legacy at the University of Michigan. To honor the anniversary, Housing’s Diversity and Inclusion office will host programming that provides an opportunity for U-M community members to engage in celebrations for the program.  Read Michigan Housing Director, Rick Gibson’s letter honoring the anniversary to learn more about the multicultural lounges and their impact on our campus community.

Happenings This Month

AA&PI Heritage Month and the Multicultural Lounges

The University of Michigan community has begun its annual celebration of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month through programming hosted by our partners in Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA). Michigan Housing’s Diversity and Inclusion Office would like to take the time to share more about the history of the Multicultural Lounge Program and activists from the Asian American & Pacific Islander community who are honored as a part of the multicultural lounge program. As our campus community navigates the racialized response to the COVID-19 pandemic which has lead to an increase in anti-Asian violence, we hope individuals will take time to learn more about the AA&PI community and join the Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month programming happening from March 17th-April 17th. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Multicultural Lounge Program and the impact the program has had on the Michigan campus community, and we also honor the contributions of the communities and activists honored through the program. The multicultural lounges listed below celebrate the AA&PI activists in whose honor lounges have been named. Visit the associated links to learn more about each multicultural lounge’s creation and history.

If you are interested in learning more about the Multicultural Lounge Program or in partnering on or hosting a Multicultural Lounge Anniversary event virtually in the spaces, please contact us at diversityandinclusion@umich.edu.

SHARE MEMORIES

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Multicultural Lounge Program, we are asking the University of Michigan community to share some of their favorite memories spent in the lounges. Please share a memory and let us know what the lounges have meant to you.
