U-M DPS SECURITY BULLETIN
Oct. 4, 2007

PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE FROM BREAK-IN

The University of Michigan Department of Public Safety (DPS) has received several reports in recent days of thefts from cars parked in U-M parking structures and lots.  The break-ins have been reported in several lots on North, Central and South campuses.  In most cases, valuables such as GPS units, iPods and equipment had been visible through the closed windows and were reported stolen.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked vehicles, immediately call DPS (911 from a campus phone or (734)763-1131 from a cell phone).  Report the parking lot number and a description of the individual(s).   If you have information about any of these thefts, please contact the DPS Criminal Investigations Unit at (734)764-8559.

Additionally, practice these safety precautions:

-       do not leave valuables in your vehicle, particularly in view;

-       lock all vehicle doors and take your keys with you when leaving the vehicle, even for a few minutes; and

-       report any suspicious activity to DPS immediately.

Confidential Tip Line 800/863-1355.
