Northwood Community
Apartments strives to maintain top-quality residential facilities and
offer the operational services residents need for optimal comfort and
convenience.
Air
Conditioning
Some townhouses
in Northwood IV and V have individually controlled central air conditioning.
Residents may install air conditioners of 12 amps or less, a minimum of
5000 BTUs and a maximum of 12000 BTUs, using window platforms provided
by Northwood Community Apartments. Air conditioners must
be registered and a fee is charged. The number of airconditioners
is determined by the number of bedrooms in the townhouse or apartment.(i.e.,
2 air conditioners are allowed in a 2-bedroom apartment or townhouse.)
A separate application form is required for each air conditioning unit.
Residents who install their own window air conditioner accept full responsibility
for installation and removal and for any damage incurred during such installation
or removal.
Grounds
Care
Professional landscaping and regular grounds maintenance create well-groomed
lawns and planted beds throughout North Campus.
Heating
The heat in Northwood I, II, and III is centrally controlled according
to weather conditions. Northwood IV and V heat is individually controlled
by thermostats in each townhouse.
Kitchen
Appliances
All units come with an electric refrigerator/freezer, a gas oven/stove,
and a garbage disposal within the sink.
Laundry
Facilities
Northwood I apartments have hook-ups for residents to install electric
washers and gas dryers. Northwood IV and V units have hook-ups for electric
washers and electric and gas dryers. Conveniently located coin-operated
machines are available in Northwood II and III to all Northwood residents.
Community clotheslines are provided near the laundry rooms on North Campus.

Maintenance
& FIX-IT
The University employs a dedicated, professional service staff, including
custodians, mechanics, and trades technicians supported by designers,
engineers, and architects to maintain Northwood facilities. All units
are thoroughly cleaned and equipment adjusted before new residents move
in. Northwood Community Apartments prides itself on responding promptly
and capably to maintenance needs. Requests for maintenance service can
be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling (76) FIX-IT or submitting
a request online.
Residents are encouraged to call during business hours if possible; after
business hours, residents should leave a detailed message describing the
maintenance request, and include the address and telephone number where
maintenance is needed. Maintenance emergencies that occur after business
hours should be reported immediately to the Plant Operations Call Center
at 647-2059.
Pest
Control
The Northwood Community Apartments office maintains a professional, licensed
pest control service provided to residents free of charge. Periodic inspections
of units are conducted to watch for signs of insect infestation, and specialists
will respond quickly to pest problems reported by residents. To report

Power
Outages
Northwood residents can pro-actively prepare and review the following
power outages procedures.
Recycling
Program
The University is involved in a comprehensive energy management and recycling
program designed to reduce costs and protect the environment. All residents
are encouraged to participate in recycling efforts by using specially
designated containers for newspaper, magazines, cans, and bottles.

Snow
Removal
During winter, snow removal on roads and parking lots is provided as often
as necessary. Within Northwood grounds, the Grounds and Waste Management
staff will clear snow from the main sidewalks as promptly as possible.
Residents are expected to clear the snow from their apartment entrance
up to the main sidewalk. Northwood Community Apartments provides snow
shovels for residents to share. These can be found in the parking lots
near the dumpsters, and at the Northwood Community Center. Any questions
can be directed by email or telephone to the northwood@umich.edu
at 764-9998. If urgent assistance is needed after office hours, residents
may contact the emergency-after-hours staff at the emergency maintenance
office at 647-2059.
The University maintains
a separate system for snow removal around the academic buildings. More
information on the details of the system can be and reporting areas needing
attention can be found on the Housing website's Constuction
area.
Storage
Facilities
On-site storage lockers are provided for residents of Northwood I, II,
and III. All locations in Northwood IV and V have unfinished basements
which may be used for storage.
