Spend only one hour per week.

Volunteer in the Northwood Community English Language Program!

Volunteer Information Meeting:
Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Northwood Community Center, 1000 McIntyre, Ann Arbor, MI 48105
(near the corner of McIntyre and Hubbard, on UM north campus) Refreshments will be served!

What is the English Language Program about?
The English Language Program offers English as a Second Language classes for both adults and children. Most English Language Program
class participants live in Northwood Community Apartments on North Campus. Classes are held at the Community Center or other Northwood buildings in the morning, afternoon and evening.

How can you participate?
1. AS A CONVERSATION PARTNER
You would be matched with a particular adult student in the English Language Program. You would meet your partner for one hour every week to practice speaking English. You can do different things together, such as going for walks, going out for coffee or lunch, visiting a museum, etc. This is a wonderful way to meet new people and make new friends!

You may request a partner with a particular language background, but this cannot be guaranteed. The time commitment for this volunteer activity is one hour per week, but it may be two hours per week if languages are "traded" (e.g., if you speak Japanese for one hour and English for one hour).

NOTE: The Conversation Partner program is for adult class participants and volunteers. However, each summer we welcome teens (ages 11-17) to volunteer to help teens who have just arrived from other countries.

2. AS A CLASSROOM PARTNER
You would come to a specific English class at the same time each week and participate in special activities planned by the teacher. In adult classes, these activities would include interviews, role plays, and small group conversations. In children's classes, activities would include helping children or teens do individual, pair, or small group activities or projects. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in education, international studies, languages, or just helping others!

How can I sign up to volunteer?
The best way to arrange to be a Classroom or Conversation Partner is by coming to the Volunteer Information Meeting at the beginning of the semester. However, if you are unable to attend the meeting, don't worry! We can still make arrangements for you to participate. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 764-8463, or email Laurie Nutt .
