Community Aide Application Process

The Community Aide selection process happens each year in January. Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year will begin in December 2009, through Wednesday, January 13, 2010. Those received after January 13 will be placed into a late pool if there's an unexpected additional opening.

If a mid-year vacancy opens due to a staff member leaving early, Northwood will interview and select candidates from the applications on file.

Information sessions will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Northwood Community Center (1000 McIntyre Drive), at 2:00 pm and at 7:00 pm.

A link to the application will appear on this page in December. Questions may be directed to Candra Gill at 734-764-9998.

Eligibility

An applicant may be a graduate or undergraduate student, spouse or partner of a student, and must remain eligible during the full term of the contract period. The primary contract holder must have a student status. Residents with staff or faculty housing contracts are not eligible to apply.

Applicants who have an international visa are eligible. Since compensation is in the form of a staff apartment, a work permit is not required.

All applicants must have and maintain good academic and financial standing with the University. Applicants who receive financial aid should consult with a Financial Aid officer. Some scholarships limit the types of employment that are allowed under their guidelines.

Selection Criteria

  • Skill in verbal, non-verbal and written communication, especially with those of different social, economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds or sexual orientation.
  • Applicants must speak English well, either as a second language or primary language.
  • Experience in planning, delivering and evaluating group events and activities that address the educational, social, cultural and recreational needs of participants.
  • Interpersonal facilitation and leadership skills in mobilizing groups, assessing and reaching out to community members.
  • Attention to detail. Effective time-manager, responsible team player.
  • Motivated and self-directed, able to work effectively without direct supervision on a daily basis, but work in consultation with supervision.

Applicants who have the highest eligibility status for the type of apartment under consideration are given stronger consideration when all other factors are equal.

It is the Housing staff's goal to select the most qualified applicants without regard to age, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, race, physical handicap, religion, national origin, or any other distinction which does not directly relate to job requirements. University Housing strives to hire a Community Aide staff that collectively reflects the diversity of the community.

Other Requirements

  • The selected applicant must relocate to the Community Aide staff apartment in the assigned area.
  • Must be willing to attend all scheduled training sessions and adjust personal commitments to accommodate Community Aide responsibilities. Outside employment is possible with prior approval of the supervisor.
  • Able to move, transport, reach, bend and handle program supplies and equipment for activities. Ability to lift or carry up to 70lbs.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office.
