Air Conditioning --Northwood I, II, III, IV, and V

Central Air Conditioning

Central air conditioning is standard in some Northwood IV and V apartment townhouses.

Window Air Conditioners

For Northwood apartments that do not have central air, window air conditioners can be installed by the Northwood facilities staff for a fee. Northwood residents may have their own window air conditioners installed; University Housing does not loan or sell air conditioners. Units must be 12 amps or less, a minimum of 5,000 BTUs and a maximum of 12,000 BTUs. You may have one window air conditioner for each bedroom in your apartment.

Monthly Operating Costs

A monthly fee, based on the BTU usage of each air conditioner, is charged to offset increased electricity consumption. Rates are not affected by weather, occupancy or actual usage.

A one-month minimum installation fee is required, regardless of the removal date. Air conditioners installed between the 1st and 14th of the month will be assessed a full monthly rate for that period. Installations that are completed between the 15th and the end of the month will be charged half of the monthly rate for that period. Unregistered air conditioners, or air conditioners that were installed previously but not registered for the current cooling season, will be charged a fee of $35/month for the duration of the cooling season; season length will be determined by Housing Facilities Staff. All air conditioner fees will be assessed to your U-M account.

Installation Options & Fees

Facilities staff must install resident-owned air conditioners. Residents will be charged a one-time fee of $75 which covers both installation and removal. Requests for installation are made when you complete your on-line Air Conditioner application. On your preferred installation day, please place the air conditioner in the room you specified and make sure there is clear access to the window. Every effort will be made to fulfill installation requests within five business days of your requested install date; however, delays are possible when the workload is high.

If extension cords are required, they must be three-wire grounded, in good condition and have a minimum of a 14-gauge rating.

If you have any questions regarding air conditioner registration, installation or fees, please contact Housing Facilities via email.
