Michigan students are not required to live in residence halls, but each year nearly 9,400 of them do— for a lot of excellent reasons. Since residence halls are one of the best places to meet others and enter into campus life, most first-year students prefer to live on campus. Also, many residents return for their sophomore, junior and even senior years because of the amenities, conveniences and friendships.

Residence halls are much more than just a place to crash and study. They function as smaller, more accessible communities within the University of Michigan. They provide a SENSE OF BELONGING.

As a member of a residence hall community, you’ll be invited to participate in a range of social activities that runs the gamut from concerts to movie screenings to sporting events. On weekends, you can look forward to ice cream sundae socials and special theme events like Mardi Gras Night.

You’ll also have the chance to be informed on topics relevant to student life. Each term also brings a full schedule of seminars and workshops on topics such as diet and nutrition, alcohol use and abuse, stress management, sexuality, diversity, academics, health education and study techniques.

Residence hall residents at Michigan make new contributions each year by participating in a long tradition of giving back to the University and Ann Arbor communities through varied community service projects and activities. Our residents help build houses for Habitat for Humanity, volunteer as Big Brothers or Sisters and contribute to projects across the U.S. during Alternative Spring Break.
